HERAT, AFGHANISTAN, NOV 20 – About 240 grooms and brides got married in a mass wedding ceremony in Herat province, Western Afghanistan.
The event was organized by a charity organization, and each newlywed couple received home furnishings, including carpets, blankets, and kitchen utensils worth US$1,460, said Mawlawi Abdul Haq Sadiqi, head of the organization.
Young people may have to wait for years to have a wedding ceremony due to unemployment, economic crisis, high dowry costs and expensive gifts in poverty-stricken countries.
Previously, a mass wedding event was held in the northern Sari Pul region, where 100 couples got married. Afghanistan’s interim government has repeatedly called on people to prevent irrational marriage customs and avoid wasting money on wedding ceremonies.- Xinhua
