Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has backed Gladys Berejiklian for a tilt in federal politics, describing the former NSW Premier as a “wonderful leader” and an “incredible politician”.

Mr Frydenberg remained coy when asked whether the groundwork was being laid for a return to politics, but expressed hope Ms Berejiklian would not hang up her boots just yet.

“I don’t think Gladys Berejiklian’s made any decisions about her future,” he told Sky News Australia. “Obviously, she would be most welcome in federal politics.”

“I think she’s a wonderful leader, an incredible politician, and she’s a good person to boot and I have a very positive and constructive relationship with her.

“But they will be decisions that she will have to make in her own time but I would hope her career in public life is not over yet.”
