Boyzone’s Keith Duffy announces his ‘hero’ father Sean has died at 77

Boyzone star Keith Duffy has announced the devastating news that his father, Sean, has died at the age of 77. 

The 47-year-old shared the news in an Instagram post on Tuesday with photos of Sean throughout his life and posing with Keith and the singer’s son Jay. 

In the caption, the popstar wrote: ‘Sean Duffy. 1945 – 2022.

‘Words cannot describe how heartbroken we are to announce the passing of our father/grandfather Sean. The most courageous and brave warrior we’ve ever known and probably will ever know.

‘We already miss him so much. Keith & Jay. X.’ 

In a separate Instagram story, Duffy posted another picture, writing ‘my hero, my idol, my da’. 

Keith’s Boyzone bandmate Ronan Keating expressed his condolences and commented: ‘Sending all our love.’ 

The No Matter What singer received support from many of his other celebrity friends, including former rugby star Thom Evans who wrote: ‘So sorry for your loss Keith. Sending my sincere condolences to you and all the family 🙏🏼x.’ 

Former Westlife singer Brian McFadden wrote: ‘What a fighter! What a man!’ 

Love Island star Maura Higgins wrote: ‘So so sorry for your loss 😢 thinking of you & your family and sending you all the love and strength.’ 

Actor Sean Maguire said: ‘Oh Keith. Im so sorry. Sending you love and strength. Im sure you made him so proud.’

TV presenter Laura Whitmore simply left a red heart emoji in support, as did Keith’s bandmate Shane Lynch. 

A cause of death was not revealed by Keith opened up about his father’s ill health in March 2020. 

He told The Sun: ‘My dad is not well at the moment so he is having to mind himself but even though he’s not well, my dad would still get up and go to work.   

‘Before the pandemic he was stuck at home for a few weeks and with the extra weeks of the pandemic he is starting to go stir crazy.

‘I think he is looking forward to getting out of the house and go for a walk, you know. He has been telling me for years he is 69 so I don’t think he’s telling me the truth any more. He’s definitely past 70.’
