Brewhouse & Kitchen pub in Sutton Coldfield closes for ‘six-figure’ refurbishment

A popular Birmingham pub has closed as it undergoes a revamp to get ready for the year ahead.

The Brewhouse & Kitchen in Sutton Coldfield ’s Birmingham Road, closed following the January 3 Bank Holiday to undergo a refurbishment – its first in six years since opening in the town.

The pub is having a refresh inside and out with scaffolding going up outside the property as work gets underway.

Among the changes are a fully repainted front, while retaining the building’s existing design.

The pub and restaurant will have an updated front patio garden area with new furniture, festoon lighting and planting.

This will ‘complement’ recently works in the main beer garden at the rear of the property which has seen the return of the stretch tent, covering around 60 per cent of the outside area. It had originally been put in, during winter 2020/21 and was removed in May last year.

But customers said they wanted it to return, and it makes for a cosier outside space with additional heaters being installed to supplement blankets for those looking to drink and eat in the colder months.

The beer garden has its own bar and will be available to hire for private garden parties in the spring and summer months – something Boris Johnson may welcome.

The venue said will be an additional booking space in the new astro-turfed area.

Inside the pub its out with animal heads and bric-a-brac to make way for a new colour scheme, a revarnished floor, new artwork and improvements to the ‘brewpad’ – the brewing area which gives the venue its name. It will also have improved drainage.

And when the venue reopens it will add to its existing Brewery Experience Days, which include beer and gin masterclasses, and for 2022 will now include whiskey and beer pairing masterclasses ‘where two great worlds collide’.

The venue is also expanding its food offering with a new weekend brunch menu, with earlier weekend opening times where customers can enjoy ‘newspapers, board games with a roaring real wood firepit’.

B&K’s general manager, Gary Bruce, said: “We are proud to have established ourselves within the local community over the last six years and it is fantastic that we are now in a position to re-invest in the brewpub to keep the offer fresh and exciting.

“We are reopening at 5pm on Friday January 21 where we will be showcasing our fresh new look.

“It has been refreshed and will be noticeable to our returning guests.

”We want to still retain the feel of what’s made us popular in the first place.

“But also bring the venue up-to-date.”
