New Year’s attacks, 12 under investigation between Milan and Turin

Hours and hours scanning the images, videos and social networks, using the latest in terms of facial recognition software: it was mainly thanks to the hard work of the experts of the Scientific Police that 18 boys were identified who are allegedly involved in the three attacks on New Year’s Eve in Piazza Duomo against nine very young women. It is about 15 adults (four Italians, four Italians of foreign origin and seven foreigners) and three minors (an Italian, an Italian of foreign origin and a foreigner) between 15 and 21 years. So they would not be just foreigners or second generations as had been assumed. Twelve of them are already formally investigated for gang rape, robbery and injury. Some have little precedents. But the numbers, let the Milan prosecutor know, are destined to grow. Also with regard to the victims: other incidents of harassment that would have occurred on New Year’s Eve but also in the previous days are being investigated.

Aggressions not only on New Year’s Eve

The investigation, which began thanks to numerous videos of the attacks, culminated on Tuesday morning with a flurry of searches carried out in Milan, Turin and one in the province of Bergamo. In fact, nine of the boys are resident in Turin and have moved away to go to Milan to “celebrate” New Year’s Eve. They are the only ones who knew each other, but not with the others. So for now, a directing of the attacks is excluded. From the searches the investigators of the Milan mobile squad, coordinated by the adjunct Letizia Mannella and by the prosecutor Alessia Menegazzo, they aim to find evidence to accurately attribute the individual conduct to each of the alleged authors. In particular, the investigators they searched for clothing that was “absolutely characterizing and individualizing” emerged from the vision of the images of the surveillance systems, from the stories of various witnesses and the victims themselves. Furthermore, the cell phones of the suspects were seized in search of chats exchanged on various social networks in which they may have admitted the attacks.

For now nine victims

A nineteen-year-old girl surrounded and harassed ended up as victims of the herd: convinced that they wanted to rob her enough to throw the bag hoping to be thrown in peace, which did not happen. Two girls, who had approached to see what had happened, were in turn groped. Near the Gallery, a girl was groped and robbed of her cell phone, and three other girls who had approached to help her too were attacked. And finally the attack on two German students, in Milan for New Year’s Eve, just before midnight. “I hope they find them and that justice is done for us and for all the other girls who were molested that evening”: so one of the two German girls involved in the New Year’s Eve episodes in Milan commented to an agency.

The satisfaction of the Commissioner

“It seems to me that 10 days after the events, today’s response on what happened in Piazza Duomo at the last year was adequate and rapid” said the commissioner of Milan Giuseppe Petronzi.
