Philippe Coutinho reveals his Steven Gerrard ‘dream’ after making Aston Villa decision

Philippe Coutinho describes Steven Gerrard as a ‘big leader’ and admits he learned a lot from the former Liverpool captain as a team-mate at Anfield.

Gerrard is now Coutinho’s head coach after the Barcelona star agreed to reunite with his former skipper at Aston Villa.

Coutinho was convinced to join Villa’s ambitious project by Gerrard, who has made a bright start to Premier League management in his first two months at the Villa Park helm.

And the Villa boss will be relishing the opportunity to work with Coutinho, and help revive his career, especially after the Brazilian admitted the ex-England international played a key role in his development.

“He is one of the best players I’ve played with and I learned a lot from him,” Coutinho said back in 2017.

“When I arrived at Liverpool, it was a dream to play with him, a guy who I used to watch in Brazil and I used to play with on the PlayStation.

“Stevie G is the best midfielder I’ve played with. He was an idol for me and for everyone who watched him play, but when you were together with him, and you see him training, it was different – he was even better.

“He was great at shooting, passing and defending, and a big leader.”
