It says the pope will visit Edmonton, along with Quebec City and Iqaluit, on his trip from July 24 to 29.

The visit follows the pope’s apology in April for the Roman Catholic Church’s role in Canada’s residential schools.

An estimated 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend residential schools and more than 60 per cent of the schools were run by the Catholic Church.

Edmonton Archbishop Richard Smith was one of a small group of bishops who joined Métis, First Nation and Inuit delegations to the Holy See at the Vatican earlier in the spring.

Speaking last month, Smith said the Pope encouraged the church’s senior members to not only continue the dialogue but “walk with Indigenous people” as well.

“The Pope was clear that words, as important as they are, can’t just stand alone — it has to be followed by some concrete action,” Smith said.
