38.7 degrees: So far the hottest day of the year in Austria

38.7 degrees were measured in Seibersdorf, Lower Austria, on Friday. However, temperatures could still increase by 5 p.m.

This Friday is the hottest day of the year so far. That reports the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (zamg). At 3.45 p.m., 38.7 degrees were measured at the Zamg weather station in Seibersdorf (Baden district, Lower Austria) – and it can get a little hotter. The previous high of 37.8 degrees in 2022 – also registered in Seibersdorf on July 23 – was thus overshadowed.

At 3.45 p.m. it was already at least 37 degrees at seven weather stations: Seibersdorf, Wolkersdorf, Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, Pottschach (all in Lower Austria), as well as in Mattersburg (Burgenland), Vienna Donaufeld and St. Andrä/Lavantal (Carinthia). The temperatures should increase a little until around 5 p.m.

Heavy thunderstorms approaching

At the same time, a cold front was approaching from the west. According to the Zamg, strong thunderstorms are possible in the western half of Austria in the afternoon and on Saturday night. There could also be storms with heavy rain and thus mudslides and small-scale flooding. Rain showers are possible everywhere on Saturday and in the south of Austria there are also some strong thunderstorms, regional storms are also possible here.
