NEW YORK — The Cure, one of the most popular bands of the 1980s new wave era, has released its first new single in 16 years.

The band premiered “Alone” on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC 6 Music radio show Thursday morning, according to the band’s website. It’s available for streaming here.

“Alone” is the first single from the band’s latest album, “Songs of A Lost World,” which will be released on Nov. 1. This is the 14th studio album released by the band, which has sold more than 30 million recordings during its long career.

“It’s the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus,” Smith said in a news release. “I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone’, always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be … as soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem ‘Dregs’ by the English poet Ernest Dowson … and that was the moment when I knew the song — and the album — were real.”

Despite not having released new music since 2008′s “4:13 Dream,” the band has toured regularly and performed at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls in June 2023.

The Cure was formed in 1978 and rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as “Just Like Heaven,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Pictures of You,” “A Forest,” and “Close to Me.” Perhaps its biggest hit was released in 1992, “Friday I’m in Love.”
