Game of the Week: Salina Central vs. Maize South

Game of the Week: Salina Central vs. Maize South

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW)—It’s playoff time for high school football teams across the state, and for Week 9’s Game of the Week, the Salina Central High School Mustangs travel to Maize South High School to take on the Mavericks.

Mustangs

Salina Central enters this matchup with a 4-4 record, but they did get an impressive victory last week against the Goddard Lions. They know they’ll need to play well once again this Friday night if they hope to take down Maize South.

“You know, we’re just a couple a couple of days away, couple of times shooting ourselves in the foot, you know, for that record, looking a little bit different. But, you know, it’s also our mindset. It really didn’t matter where we were going to end up. We thought one through 12 or one through 13 in five, eight. West was. There’s a lot of parity. So whether you’re the higher seed or you’re the lower seed, you know, it’s not ‘add up at 0-0’ right now. And now we all got to place before,” said Salina Central’s head football coach, Mark Sandbo.

Mavericks

Maize South’s head coach, Brent Pfeifer, says the intensity is always heightened in the postseason, and the biggest challenge for his team heading into this matchup might be the size and physicality of Salina Central.

“They’re big. Probably one of the bigger teams we’ve seen on film across the state this year, you know, watching different guys play. You know, they’re a very big physical team. So, you know, it’ll be a really good test for us. I think when you get in the playoffs when you know, two teams that are pretty evenly matched, you know, it’s going to be mistakes, turnovers, penalties are always going be huge,” said Pfeifer.
