Bus lanes, park-and-ride reduce traffic congestion

KUCHING, 6 NOV – Sarawak is working to improve its public transport network by providing special bus routes, improving the bus priority signaling system and introducing the concept park-and-ride which is innovative.

State Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the concept park-and-ride allowing users to park their vehicles at a designated location and take a bus to the city center which is seen as the best way to reduce traffic congestion in urban areas.

“We are also exploring more sustainable mobility options such as cycling and walking. However, it needs to be adapted to municipal planning and infrastructure, including providing more covered walkways and cycling paths that are safe and easily accessible,” he said in a statement today.

He said Sarawak is currently testing a new technology to implement a bus priority signaling system that allows buses to receive green light priority at traffic light intersections to reduce delays and improve schedule compliance.

Meanwhile, Lee said as many as 56 new buses are expected to arrive in Kuching early next year to further modernize public transport in the city. – Named
