Israel guns Lebanon’s historic buildings

BEIRUT, NOV 7 – Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday destroyed a historic building near the Baalbek temple complex in eastern Lebanon

The Governor of Baalbek, Hermel Bachir Khodr told the Agency Anatolia that the attack caused the destruction of Manshieh’s historic buildings.

“This building is located in an area classified as a heritage site and originates from the Ottoman era,” he said.

An official of the Ministry of Culture who refused to be identified, told Anatolia that one of the Israeli airstrikes destroyed the historic building of Manshieh, classified by the ministry and dating from the Ottoman era in the Levant (1516–1918) and located near the historic Baalbek temple complex.

Khodr said the attack was the closest to the Baalbek temple complex, and an inspection would be carried out to determine if there was any damage to the structure.

In recent weeks, Israeli airstrikes have targeted Baalbek, City of the Sunknown for its archaeological sites, most of which date back to the Roman era, according to the report.

Israel has launched a massive air campaign in Lebanon since late September against what it claims are Hezbollah targets, in an escalation of cross-border conflict between Israel and the Lebanese group since the start of Israel’s brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip.

At least 3,050 people have been killed and nearly 13,700 wounded in Israeli attacks since October 2023, according to Lebanese health authorities.

Israel expanded the conflict by launching a ground offensive into southern Lebanon on October 1. – Named
