CLEVELAND, Ohio — Satire publication The Onion has purchased conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ website Infowars at a bankruptcy auction.
Infowars’ business went to auction after the trustee in charge of his bankruptcy proceedings moved to shut down the site and liquidate his assets.
The auction will help pay the more than $1 billion that Jones owes the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting after losing a defamation lawsuit. Jones, a conservative talk-show host, was accused by the victims’ families of calling the 2012 shooting which left 20 children and six adults dead, a hoax.
In a social media post Thursday morning, Jones said InfoWars was being shut down.
The Onion CEO Bryce P. Tetraeder posted a satirical article on the website Thursday morning sharing why he decided to buy InfoWars.
“All told, the decision to acquire InfoWars was an easy one for the Global Tetrahedron executive board,” he said about the acquisition.
He said InfoWars has distinguished itself as an invaluable tool for brainwashing and controlling the masses.
“With a shrewd mix of delusional paranoia and dubious anti-aging nutrition hacks, they strive to make life both scarier and longer for everyone, a commendable goal,” Tetraeder wrote.
