A cold front is draped across Kansas this morning, producing a few spotty showers around the area while our main storm system approaches from the southwest.
Clouds will be in place most of the day, with occasional sprinkles and showers but the more substantial moisture holds off until tonight.
Starting from the 50s in Wichita, we head for the mid 60s with slow warming due to the clouds. Western Kansas starts colder but gets a little more sunshine to make up the difference by afternoon.
Highs range from the 50s to the 60s today across the state.
Rain begins to spread into southern Kansas close to sundown.
This area of rain grows and gets heavier toward midnight.
Widespread heavy rain is expected through the night and into Monday morning.
Low temperatures tonight will be chilly, ranging from the 20s to the 50s.
The rain will persist through the morning, with more breaks appearing for the second half of the day. Winds also become stronger as the core of the storm system tracks overhead.
There is the outside chance of a storm or two becoming severe especially in south-central Kansas tomorrow morning. The threat level is limited but no hazard is completely out of the question.
Highs tomorrow will be cooler to the northwest with milder conditions persisting in central and eastern Kansas. Winds statewide will be stronger.
This system quickly heads for the exit toward sundown Monday, and then we are left dry. Rain potential is still looking healthy with widespread 1-2″ totals, some localized pockets of 3″ or more are not out of the question. Northwest Kansas has the lowest potential for rainfall from this system.
Cooler, quieter weather for the week ahead. A follow-up disturbance late Tuesday into Wednesday will have little moisture to work with, and other than a few isolated showers we should stay mostly dry through next weekend.
