WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita Mayor Lily Wu is pushing back against a plan to add public bathrooms and a drinking fountain in downtown Wichita.
On Tuesday, the city council will vote on adding $30,000 to the budget because the lowest bid is above estimates.
If approved, the project would total $660,000. The mayor does not believe adding bathrooms at Naftzger and A. Price Woodard parks is the best use of taxpayer money.
“We have a $22 million budget deficit from 2025 to 2028, so everything should be on the table if it’s not a priority that community believes is public safety or public works,” Wu said.
The city council originally approved the restrooms and hydration stations last year, before Mayor Wu, Dalton Glasscock and J.V. Johnston were elected.
The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in council chambers. You can watch it online by clicking here.
