TENERIFE, NOV 19 – Bryan Zaragoza converted a late penalty to help Euro 2024 champions Spain beat Switzerland 3-2 in a Nations League match yesterday.
The defending Nations League champions, already guaranteed top spot in Group A4, led twice but were chased down by already-eliminated Switzerland in Tenerife.
It was Spain’s first game on the island in 28 years and fans were able to celebrate victory after a late penalty by Bayern Munich winger Zaragoza.
Coach Luis de la Fuente overhauled his entire line-up from last Friday’s win over Denmark, handing Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aitor Paredes his debut.
Canary Islands native Yeremi Pino put Spain ahead on home soil in the 32nd minute after Pedri’s penalty was saved.
Captain Alvaro Morata won the penalty and laid the ball off for Pedri to take, but Yvon Mvogo saved the Barcelona midfielder’s effort.
De la Fuente brought on another player making his debut with the national team at half-time, namely Porto striker Samu Aghehowa.
Joel Monteiro equalized for Switzerland but minutes later Bryan Gil recovered the ball to put Spain back in front.
Andi Zeqiri scored from the penalty spot after Fabian Ruiz was fouled in the 85th minute, but Zaragoza ensured Spain could end an incredible year on a high note.
The winger, on loan to Osasuna from Bayern, made a quick run into the penalty box before being brought down by Vincent Sierro. – AFP
