MACEDONIA, Ohio — C.J. Newell scored both of Glenville’s touchdowns, while junior linebacker Cincere Johnson blocked an extra point in the third quarter that made overtime possible Friday night against Perry for an OHSAA Division IV football regional championship.
Glenville advanced with a 12-6 victory, capped by Newell’s 20-yard touchdown run on his team’s first offensive play of overtime. It followed a drive that went backwards for Perry, which went from the 20 to its own 45 after two holding penalties and a sack by defensive tackle Jamir Perez.
See how it unfolded with the above videos and hear from Newell, Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr., sophomore quarterback LaMarques Greenwood II and senior defensive end Jonnell George Jr.
Newell overcame a second-quarter fumble, which followed Perry’s only turnover, after he scored Glenville’s first touchdown early in the second quarter. He rushed the ball 10 times for 39 yards and caught Greenwood’s only completion on three passes for minus-1 yards.
Defending Division V state champion Perry (12-2), which moved up in the offseason, got big defensive performances from senior linebacker Owen McKoon and sophomore Carter Hopkins. Both notched a team-high seven tackles, while junior end Trent Taylor came up with one of three sacks. McKoon and Hopkins had the others.
George had two sacks for Glenville (11-3), which advances to face Sandusky Perkins (13-1) on Friday next week at a site to be announced this weekend by the OHSAA.
Perry senior quarterback Walter Moses threw for 112 yards on 12-of-22 passing with a third-quarter TD pass to Hopkins, who added 59 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Glenville controlled the ground game with 206 yards, led by sophomore Romell Phillips with 87 yards on 16 carries. Greenwood ran 14 times for 80 yards, and both had big runs to set up Newell’s early score.
