Edo Queens lose third place match on penalties

Edo Queens missed out on a third-place finish in the CAF Women’s Champions League after losing 4-3 in a penalty shootout to FC Masar of Egypt in a tightly contested classification match.

The Nigerian champions dominated the game but failed to convert their chances during regular time, resulting in a 0-0 draw that was eventually decided by penalties.

Coach Moses Aduku made three changes to the starting lineup, bringing in Blessing Illiveida, Mary Mamudu, and Esther Inyang for the crucial match. Despite controlling possession and implementing a high-pressing strategy, Edo Queens could not find a breakthrough against the resolute Egyptian defence.

The match was characterised by Edo Queens’ aggressive approach, which frequently disrupted FC Masar’s attempts to play out from the back. However, the Nigerian side struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities despite their territorial dominance.

In the nerve-wracking penalty shootout, FC Masar emerged victorious 4-3, clinching the bronze medal and leaving Edo Queens to settle for fourth place.

The result meant Edo Queens earned $300,000 in prize money, while FC Masar collected $350,000. Both teams were making their debut in the prestigious continental competition.
