The Buckeyes (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten) downed the Northwestern Wildcats in front of a unique spectacle at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois on Nov. 16.
Their only loss remains a one-point slip up at top-ranked Oregon. A win against the Hoosiers would inch them even closer to a chance at a rematch with the Ducks in the Big Ten title game.
It will be their third top-five matchup this season.
The Buckeyes have the third-highest points per game margin in the country, outscoring teams by an average of 27.5 points. The offense is averaging 37.8 points per game, which is eighth in the nation.
Ohio State is paced by senior quarterback Will Howard, who has thrown for 2,484 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. In addition to hitting 73% of his passes, Howard touts an 85.5 QBR, which is the fifth-highest in the nation.
His top target, freshman sensation Jeremiah Smith, has hauled in 49 receptions for 865 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 17.7 yards per reception. Smith has scored at least one touchdown in eight of his 10 games this season.
Senior Emeka Egbuka has a quiet 49 receptions, 612 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 12.5 yards per reception.
The Buckeyes’ already battered offensive line took another hit when they lost Alabama transfer Seth McLaughlin to an Achilles injury in practice. Ohio State will start junior Carson Hinzman at center and move sophomore Austin Siereveld over to left guard, per head coach Ryan Day.
It remains to be determined how that switch will impact the running game, which is spearheaded by junior Quinshon Judkins and senior TreVeyon Henderson.
Judkins has tallied 121 carries for 723 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging six yards per rush. Henderson has notched 89 carries for 662 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 7.4 yards per rush.
Ohio State’s defense is No. 2 in the nation, behind only Texas. They are the No. 1 scoring defense (10.3 points per game) and No. 4 in run defense, allowing 90.7 yards per game.
Delving deeper, Ohio State is allowing just 7.3 points per game at home. The Buckeyes defense as a whole have allowed a team more than 17 points twice since 2022.
This is a massive second chance for Ohio State’s secondary, which was burned against Oregon.
Senior cornerback Denzel Burke and junior cornerback Davison Igbinosun will have to keep Indiana’s receiving core in front of them. Burke has 26 solo tackles with two interceptions and two pass deflections. Igbinosun has 16 solo tackles with two interceptions, including a stunning reversal against Penn State.
Sizzling sophomore Caleb Downs will also be on alert. He has 27 solo tackles and three pass deflections, garnering national recognition for his stellar play.
Ohio State’s red zone defense has been phenomenal, allowing teams to score just 52.2% of the time, which ranks second in the nation.
Senior defensive end JT Tuimoloau has nabbed 18 solo tackles with five sacks and one forced fumble while senior defensive end Jack Sawyer has notched 16 solo tackles with three sacks and two forced fumbles.
What was viewed as a traditional conference tune-up before “The Game” has become one of the biggest matchups of the season.

After not playing a ranked opponent all season, Indiana will finally put its unbeaten streak on the line in a true measuring stick matchup against a national powerhouse.
The Hoosiers (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) sit atop the conference, alongside undefeated Oregon, but have only played one team that is currently in the top half of the conference standings. New head coach Curt Cignetti has the Hoosiers fired up to prove they belong with the nation’s best.
Indiana has the No. 2 scoring offense (43.9 points per game) in the nation, behind only Miami. They also have the highest points per game margin in the country, blasting teams by an average of 30.1 points.
The revival of Indiana football begins with sixth-year Ohio transfer quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who has thrown for 2,410 yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions. His 88.1 QBR is the second-highest in the nation.
Rourke has been one of the cleanest pocket passers in the FBS and also has two scores on the ground.
Junior defensive lineman Mikail Kamara, one of the many James Madison transfers that came aboard along with Cignetti, has been lights out for an intimidating unit. He has amassed 18 solo tackles and 9.5 sacks with two forced fumbles. Kamara leads the FBS with 53 total pressures.
As mentioned, Ohio State’s secondary was lit up in the high-stakes matchup against Oregon. On paper, they are facing just as dangerous an offense.
Five Indiana receivers have caught multiple touchdowns. Junior Elijah Saratt leads the way with 38 receptions for 685 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 18 yards per reception. Junior receiver Omar Cooper Jr. has hauled in 24 receptions for 527 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 22 yards per reception.
Indiana also runs a two-headed rushing attack. Senior running back Justice Ellison mans the backfield with 120 carries for 686 yards and nine touchdowns. Senior back Ty Son Lawton has tallied 106 carries for 508 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Hoosiers average 4.7 yards per carry, but have taken a step back in the ground game the past few weeks. Indiana has not had a running back rush for more than 55 yards in the last two games.
Indiana’s defensive unit leads the Big Ten in sacks, tackles for loss and is third in the nation in total defense. They are the top-ranked rushing defense, allowing just 72.2 yards per game. Those are numbers that just don’t come around Bloomington.
One of their strengths has been their ability to quell momentum. The Hoosiers’ defense has been sparkling in the first quarter, allowing only 13 combined points in the opening frame this season.
Unlike Ohio State, the Hoosiers’ weakness has been in the red zone, allowing teams to score 86.4% of the time, which is ranked 87th in the nation.
The stakes are enormous. A win inches Indiana closer to unchartered territory in the College Football Playoff seedings and a date with Oregon in the Big Ten Championship game.
A loss knocks their expectations down a few pegs, propelling the Buckeyes back into the driver’s seat for Indianapolis.
