Barcelona are reportedly set to extend Robert Lewandowski’s tenure at the club, potentially affecting their pursuit of star forwards Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyökeres.
The 36-year-old Polish striker’s current contract is due to expire next summer.
However, according to Sport on Sunday, the Catalan giants are likely to activate a clause that would keep him at the club for an additional year, with discussions of extending his deal until 2027 also under consideration.
Lewandowski has been in sensational form this season, netting 20 goals in 18 appearances. His performance has reportedly convinced Barcelona to delay splurging in the transfer market for another striker.
The club has been linked with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, but their well-documented financial struggles make such acquisitions challenging in the short term.
Barcelona’s decision is viewed as a strategic move, with the club reportedly leveraging Lewandowski’s prolific scoring as a “stopgap” while addressing ongoing economic issues.
Sport notes that Barcelona remains committed to identifying a long-term successor for the Polish star but is prioritising financial stability.
“If Lewandowski maintains his current form, Barca may not need to dip into the market for another striker for at least another year,” a report by Goal on Sunday stated.
