Garden City officer hurt in crash during pursuit

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — A Garden City police officer was hurt in a crash Saturday evening. It happened around 6 p.m. in the 1200 block of N. Taylor Avenue.

The police department says the officer saw a motorcycle speed past him, going well over the speed limit on Kansas Avenue.

The officer turned on his lights and sirens and pursued the speeding motorcycle, which continued west on Old Highway 50. As the officer pursued the motorcycle, the driver of a Ford Explorer that was stopped at the intersection of Pearl Street turned left to go south as the officer attempted to go around him and the two collided.

The crash sent the officer’s patrol car into a utility pole’s guide wire, causing the vehicle to come to a stop in the middle of the road. Both the officer and the driver of the SUV were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The intersection was shut down for several hours while the investigation was underway. The suspect on the motorcycle got away and has not been found.

Anyone who may have witnessed what happened is asked to call the Garden City Police Department at 620-276-1300. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 620 275-7807 or text your tip to Garden City PD by texting GCTIP to Tip411 (847411).
