Indonesia rejects Apple’s US$100 million investment

JAKARTA, NOV 26 – The Indonesian government has officially rejected Apple’s investment proposal of US$100 million for the period 2024-2026.

“The Ministry of Industry considers the proposal submitted by Apple does not meet the aspect of justice,” said Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita yesterday, adding that Apple’s investment does not provide significant added value to the country’s income or job creation.

The amount of investment is also considered unfair compared to the investments made by other foreign technology companies that have opened factories in Indonesia.

The ministry plans to invite Apple representatives to discuss new investment proposals and outstanding commitments of US$10 million for the 2020-2023 investment period.

The government is open to negotiations to reach an agreement on Apple’s investment in Indonesia so that Apple products, including the iPhone 16 series, can obtain certification and be officially marketed in Indonesia, said Agus. – Xinhua
