BEITULMAQDIS, NOV 27 – The ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Hezbollah group brokered by the United States (US) and France came into force today, at 4 am local time.
Under the agreement, the Lebanese Armed Forces will be deployed to southern Lebanon within 60 days, while Israel will gradually withdraw its remaining troops.
The agreement also requires Hezbollah to move its forces north of the Litani River, the agency reported Anatolia. US President Joe Biden stressed that despite the absence of American military presence in southern Lebanon, “we, together with France and other parties, will provide the necessary assistance to ensure that this agreement is fully implemented and effective.”
“Civilians on both sides will soon be able to return safely to their communities and begin the process of rebuilding their homes, schools, farms, businesses, and lives,” Biden said.
According to reports, between 5,000 and 10,000 Lebanese army personnel will be deployed to the area between the Israel-Lebanon border and the Litani River. The move aims to prevent the re-strengthening of armed groups, in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported at least 55 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Monday, bringing the death toll since October 2023 to 3,823. A further 160 people were injured in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of injuries to 15,859. – Named
