The Eko Electricity Distribution Company says customers can still upgrade their meters despite the November 24 deadline expiration.
The DisCo posted on its handles that customers who have not upgraded their meters will not be able to vend.
However, the power company said the exercise can still be carried out at the moment.
“Can I still upgrade my meter now that the Token Identifier rollover deadline is over? Yes! You can still upgrade your meter to STS 2,” Eko DisCo said.
The power distributor asked the customers to visit its website to get two sets of 20-digit KCTs (Key Change Tokens) and load them one after the other to upgrade their meters.
“Do note that this upgrade is mandatory. You will not be able to vend or load your token until your meter is upgraded. This upgrade is free,” it was stated.
The PUNCH reported on Monday that except there is a last-minute intervention, about three million electricity customers may be forced into estimated billing or outright darkness due to their failure to upgrade their prepaid meters.
As of Sunday when the deadline expired, there were various complaints from customers who have yet to update their meters.
While some customers said they encountered technical glitches in updating their meters, others complained of a lack of electricity, and many said they received feedback that their meters could not be updated because they were obsolete.
Our correspondent learnt that those whose meters were not upgradeable would either choose to be in darkness or revert to the estimated billing system if they cannot wait till the day their DisCos will consider them for a new meter.
Likewise, individuals may decide to buy new meters if it is taking too long to get a free device from their utility companies.
