CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Broadview Heights man died Wednesday at the Cargill salt mine.
The office of the Cuyahoga County medical examiner identified the man as Grzegorz Sychla, 58.
The accident happened shortly after 6 p.m. at 2400 Ship Channel. Authorities have not released specific details on how Sychla died.
Cleveland police say The Mine Safety and Health Administration will handle the investigation. Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to the investigating agency and Cargill headquarters for details surrounding the incident.
The massive salt mine, where workers scoop up salt beneath fresh water, is located deep beneath Lake Erie. It stretches from Edgewater Beach to Burke Lakefront Airport and extends north for an additional three miles.
The Cargill Deicing Technology extracts at least four million tons of salt each year to sell to other cities and countries, including Canada. The company can ship by rail, truck, or boat.
