NEW YORK, 29 NOV – Many balloons are released periodically from various places in the United States (US) and several sites around the world to form a system that warns American scientists about geoengineering or geoengineeringaccording to The New York Times yesterday.
Every few weeks, researchers in Boulder, Colorado will release balloons that rise high into the sky. Similar balloons are launched but less frequently in Alaska, Hawaii and New Zealand; Reunion Island, near the coast of Africa; and also Antarctica.
“As the planet continues to warm, efforts to block solar radiation or sometimes called solar radiation modification, solar geoengineering, or climate intervention are gaining attention,” the report said. “Governments, universities, investors and even environmentalists are investing millions of dollars into research and modeling of geoengineering systems.”
Many worry that solar geoengineering could have unintended consequences, disrupting regional weather patterns and damaging everything from agriculture to local economies.
So the first step that irresponsible parties or other countries that operate without any regulation or control can do is launch it quietly, according to the report.
“The US is building a system that will allow it to determine if and when others might try to tamper with the Earth’s thermostat,” the report said, adding that “an early warning system for geoengineering is a piecemeal effort across federal agencies and laboratories. ” – Xinhua
