TOKYO, NOV 29 – A 23-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison by a court in Japan yesterday for dangerous driving that caused a fatal accident in 2021.
According to the decision of the Oita District Court, the man was driving a car at a speed of 194 kilometers per hour (km/h), well above the 60 km/h speed limit. He hit a car that was turning right at an intersection on February 9, 2021 in Oita, an area in southern Japan, which resulted in the death of the driver of the car, a 50-year-old man.
The decision came after prosecutors raised the charge from careless driving causing death to dangerous driving causing death in December 2022. The court stated that the case met the criteria of “uncontrolled high speed” but did not accept the prosecution’s claim that the driver try to prevent other cars from turning right.
Prosecutors had previously requested a prison sentence of 12 years. The name of the accused is kept confidential by the court. – Xinhua
