‘Stand Your Ground’ law does not apply to cases before law was passed, Ohio Supreme Court rules

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio’s “Stand Your Ground” law does not apply to cases that happened before lawmakers passed the legislation, the state’s Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.

The state’s high court considered whether the 2021 law should have applied to Jaidee Miree and Desmond Duncan after they were charged with murder in the 2019 killing of Ramses Hurley in Cleveland’s Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood. The men were later convicted and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
