This project uses surplus wood to create unique and durable footwear.
Creative ideas to make use of unused wood can give an aesthetic touch to your home. (Picture 1)
Some items are needed
• 1″x6″ wooden board 26 inches long (about 3 pieces)
• Jute rope
• Chop saw
• Table saw
• Drill with 5/32” and 1/4” drill bits
• Wooden clamps
• Wood oil for outdoor use
• Small hex key
CUT WOOD TO SIZE
Use a chop saw to cut the wood into 26-inch pieces. (Picture 2)
Then, use a table saw to cut the wood into 1-inch-wide strips.
Save the two strips with the original edges to use as the outside of the shoe for a neater result. (Picture 3)
DRILL HOLE FOR STRAP
Create a jig using a piece of wood and a clamp to ensure that the holes in the wood can be drilled in the same position.
The first hole is drilled about 7 inches from the end of the wood using a 5/32” drill bit.
Repeat this step for the other end. (Picture 4)
Use a 1/4” drill bit to slightly enlarge the holes in both outer strips of wood so that the knot string can be inserted into the wood. (Picture 5)
TIE WOOD WITH ROPE
Cut two jute ropes 30 inches long each. (Picture 6)
Tie a knot in the end of the first string, insert the string into the hole in the first piece of wood and use the hex key to help push the string. (Picture 7)
Pull the string tight, tie a knot in the side of the wood, and repeat this step until all the pieces of wood are strung together. (Picture 8)
Repeat the same process for the second strap. (Picture 9)
Cut the end of the string after the knot is complete. (Picture 10)
FINAL PACKAGE
Apply a weather-resistant wood oil, such as teak oil, to protect the wood from fading and cracking. (Picture 11)
Allow to dry completely before placing the footstool in front of your door.
Design Tips
• Use wood with different colors and textures to give a more interesting visual result.
• Choose high quality jute rope for strength and durability.
• Make sure all the pieces of wood are the same size to keep the footing stable.
• Add an anti-slip pad on the bottom for safety.
