PARIS, NOV 17 – A drunken man was shot dead by French police today after he threatened officers and shouted “Allahu Akbar,” a phrase often associated with Islamist militants, police sources said.
According to preliminary information, the man was holding a toy gun, said a source close to the case AFP. The man was said to be very drunk.
At around 6am, police were called to the scene where an armed man was reportedly knocking on a door in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, a southeast suburb of Paris, one of the police sources said.
The man threatened the police “by pointing a gun and shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’,” the source added, explaining that the expression means ‘God is Great’.
A police officer then drew his weapon and opened fire, killing the man despite emergency efforts, the source said. – AFP
