BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, OCT 30 – In conjunction with celebrating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Brunei Darussalam, the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law (Heidelberg, Germany) held two workshops on the Law of the Sea in collaboration with the Ministry of The Foreign Affairs and Attorney General’s Office of Brunei Darussalam is located at the Radisson Hotel.
The workshop will focus on the discussion on the interpretation, application, and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as well as three global agreements formulated based on the convention, among which are The 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of UNCLOS (1994 Implementing Agreement).
The first two implementing agreements have entered into force, while the latter is awaiting 60 ratifications to enter into force.
The first workshop took place on October 29 to 31 open to participants from ASEAN Member States, Timor-Leste, and the ASEAN Secretariat. The second workshop will be held on November 2 and will be open to participants from related agencies in Brunei.
Both workshops are funded by the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Berlin. The Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law (MPFPR) has 20 years of experience in providing high quality peace and rule of law assistance to countries and communities.
Apart from other fields, the Max Planck Foundation also has experience and expertise in the field of maritime law, including in the Southeast Asian region.
The opening of the first workshop took place at the Radisson Hotel yesterday which was officiated by the German Ambassador, Gerda Winkler; and was joined by MPFPR representative, Dr Arron Honniball as well as representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
