I have a modest proposal for streamlining many parts of the government without resorting to a heavy-handed, heads-will-roll itinerary.
In my years as a government employee, I took notice of the proliferation of jobs with no apparent benefit to the actual running of the institution. Between we who did the work and the director of our services, there were a host of people with titles such as deputy director, 1st assistant deputy director, deputy assistant to the 1st assistant director, chief of staff, assistant chief, deputy assistant chief, deputy assistant to the deputy chief etc. etc.
All of these individuals receive a substantial salary, and many have office staff under them. The actual duties of many of these people are hard to discern and differ little from duties already being performed by others.
One way to decrease this wasteful redundance without throwing anyone out is to inform every agency that after the current deputies, assistants etc. retire or move on, that position will no longer exist. It will thus give us taxpayers a break, because it’ll take another generation or two of mission creep for these agencies to re-bloat.
