Culture and entertainment: This year it is exactly 50 years since ABBA won the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton, England.

There has therefore been speculation as to whether they would appear on stage when their home country of Sweden hosts this year’s final in Malmö.

It didn’t happen. Or, a computer-animated version of the ABBA members – in a young version – appeared instead and sent their greetings to the audience.

– Thank you for still having faith in us, they said.

Clips from ABBA’s career were then shown on the big screens hanging above the stage.

Instead of ABBA themselves, a trio of other Eurovision legends appeared to sing “Waterloo”. It was Swedish Carola, Austrian Conchita Wurst and Swedish Charlotte Perrelli. The three won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1991, 2014 and 1999 respectively.

Before the Abba tribute, the presenters also made a joke suggesting that they had reunited Abba, but it turned out to be the Swedish pop group Alcanar instead.
