RIO DE JANEIRO, NOV 17 – Human rights activists placed 733 empty plates on Copacabana Beach to represent the 733 million people suffering from hunger worldwide ahead of the G20 summit here.
According to Anadolu Agency, the symbolic protest organized by civil society groups aims to draw attention to the issue of global hunger and urge world leaders to take action.
Inspired by the words of Brazilian sociologist and activist Betinho de Souza that “Hunger cannot wait,” the plate marked with a red cross aims to highlight the urgency of the crisis.
Rio will host the G20 Summit tomorrow and November 19, which will bring together the leaders of 19 major economies, the EU and the African Union under the theme: Construction of a just world and a sustainable planet.
Local residents also joined the protest in the most lively area of the city to show their support for the movement. – Named
