Anambra First Lady donates relief materials to flood victims in IDP camp

The wife of the Anambra State governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, on Wednesday, visited Central School, Odekpe in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state, where people displaced by flood in the area are currently taking shelter.

Our correspondent gathered that communities in five local government areas of the state are currently affected by the flood and they include Anambra West, Anambra East, Ogbaru, Awka North and Ayamelum LGs as a result of the rising water levels from the River Niger.

As a result of this, the state government has activated no fewer than 27 holden camps, where the displaced flood victims from these localities are presently taking refuge.

Soludo, while addressing residents of the Holden camp in Odekpe, assured them of continuous government assistance to ensure that they were well taken care of.

She urged them to use this difficult time to explore the gains of the community.

The governor’s wife equally appealed to other well-to-do individuals to reach out to those at the different Holden centres in Anambra State, expressing her belief that the challenges of the moment could be won with love and compassion.

She said, “We appealed to volunteers taking care of the camps to maintain the highest levels of hygiene, dietary caution and environmental cleanliness, as diseases could spread in such conditions if not well managed.

“The people at the camps are rest assured of the continuous government assistance to ensure that they are well taken care of. They should use this period to explore gains of the community.”

The visit also provided an opportunity for the governor’s wife to ascertain the living conditions of the camp residents, with special attention to hygiene, dietary lifestyle and overall sanitary conditions of the environment.

Soludo also used the avenue to interact with the people and encouraged them to see life beyond their current conditions, saying that the state government is fully committed to their welfare.

The South East Zonal Coordinator of the World Health Organisation, Dr Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, assured that the organisation will assist the camp with a mobile clinic and drugs to provide free medical services and check household diseases in the place.

Food items, sanitary products, beverages and cash were also donated to the four Holden centres in Ogbaru LGA.
