Music maestro who is also an Academy Award (Oscar) winner, AR Rahman, 57, and wife, Saira Banu, 50, have officially announced their separation after nearly three decades of marriage.
In a statement released through lawyers, the couple reportedly cited ‘significant emotional strain’ as well as ‘stress and difficulty’ as factors in their separation.
Adding to the statement, the situation created a gap between them even though in reality, Rahman and Saira still love each other.
Banu reportedly stated that the decision to divorce was taken reluctantly. Banu also emphasized that she needs privacy to get through this difficult moment, reported CNA Lifestyle.
Rahman and Banu got married in 1995 and were blessed with three children namely Khatija, Raheema and Ameen. Their marriage was reportedly arranged by Rahman’s mother who became an important individual in the career of the music legend.
Rahman, who was busy with his career at the time, left it to his mother to find a partner to complete his life.
After their divorce was announced, Rahman expressed his feelings and appreciation on the X platform.
“We hoped to reach the 30th (wedding) anniversary, but all things, it seems, came to an unexpected end.
“However, in this destruction, we seek meaning, even though this heart may not find its owner again.
“To our friends, thank you for your kindness and respect for privacy as we navigate this difficult period,” he said.
Rahman and Banu’s children, namely Ameen and Raheema, also asked fans to give their parents privacy through posts on social media.- Agency
