Assistant coach Reiziger leaves Ajax after six years and wants to continue as head coach | Football

Michael Reiziger will leave Ajax at the end of this season after six years, a club spokesperson confirmed on Friday following reports from the club. AD. The assistant coach, who has an expiring contract in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, wants to work as head coach.

The 49-year-old Reiziger had very successful years as Ajax’s basic player from 1994 to 1996, including winning the Champions League. In 2017 he returned to the club to become a trainer of Jong Ajax.

After the dismissal of Marcel Keizer in December 2017, Reiziger was the person with final responsibility on the bench at Ajax on an interim basis during the Eredivisie match against Willem II. He then worked as an assistant to Erik ten Hag and Alfred Schreuder, who was fired in January.

After the dismissal of Schreuder, Ajax chose to move Jong Ajax coach John Heitinga on an interim basis and Reiziger remained assistant coach. It is still unclear whether Heitinga will also be Ajax’s trainer next season, but Reiziger will therefore leave anyway. Dwight Lodeweges, who is also an assistant to Heitinga, also has a contract until the end of the season.
