Sport: Monday’s game was very important for Villa. With victory, the club would secure a place in the Champions League in the autumn. Defeat would mean that Tottenham could come very close in the battle for the important fourth place as early as Tuesday.

In the end, it was neither, but the one point sends Villa a good distance closer to a Champions League place. A point at the end of the series may indeed be necessary if Tottenham beat Manchester City on Tuesday.

Monday’s game at Villa Park was extremely dramatic from start to finish. Villa substitute Jhon Duran’s two goals in the match provided an electric finish. At the opposite end of the match, there was a terrible keeper mistake.

Just over a minute had been played when the visitors’ Harvey Elliott hit a seemingly harmless cross from the right. The ball did indeed change direction, but at the first post goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez still seemed to be in control.

He didn’t have that.

Instead of holding the ball, the Argentine fumbled the ball under him and then involuntarily pushed it into the goal.

– One of the worst goalkeeper mistakes in recent years’ Premier League. He will be reminded of that, said Viaplay commentator Kasper Wikestad.

– One of the most absurd goals of the season. Martinez will naturally have it a thousand times out of a thousand anyway, added expert Lars Tjærnås.

At the same time, the match had more to offer. After twelve minutes, Youri Tielemans equalized for the home team. Ollie Watkins was responsible for the brilliant goal-giving pass.

Then Joe Gómez narrowly stayed on the right side of Villa’s offside line and found Cody Gakpo in an open goal. Suddenly Liverpool had taken back the lead.

Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos was on his side for one of the season’s biggest misses in the Premier League when he got the chance at an open goal. The ball went wide. It was one of many Villa chances before the break.

Soon after, Ollie Watkins thought he had created new excitement in the game, but the goal-stealer’s goal was disallowed for a marginal offside after a VAR check.

Villa had plenty of opportunities to create new excitement in the match, but only five minutes before the end did substitute Jhon Duran strike from distance. It created a full fire in the match in the last minutes.

And two minutes before the end, the same Duran put the ball in the goal after having the ball almost shot at him by teammate Moussa Diaby.

Liverpool have little to play for at the end of the season. The team is number three in the table. In the last league round at home against Wolverhampton, Jürgen Klopp will be dismissed as manager.

The blunder was of the very rare kind in what was supposed to be a fireworks display of a football match.

After the break, another cold shower awaited Villa instead. The 21-year-old Jarell Quansah has delivered a great season for Liverpool, and Monday also saw the first goal. The centre-back towered in the air at a set piece and headed in 3–1.
