Science and technology: On the Apollo 8 space flight in 1968, Anders took an iconic photo that became known as “Earth ascent”. Through the capsule’s window, he caught an image of a partially darkened Earth rising above the barren lunar landscape below them.

Anders died on Friday when his plane crash-landed off the San Juan Islands in the state of Washington. He was alone on board.

– The family is devastated. He was a great pilot, and we will miss him terribly, says his son Greg Anders to the AP news agency.

After his aerospace career, William Anders had several jobs in the American government, and he was, among other things, the US ambassador to Norway from 1976 to 1977.
