Social conditions: On Thursday, the Spanish Football Federation chose to accept the appeal that Atletico had submitted against the punishment the club was imposed some time ago. The sanctions were based on racism directed at Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams.

Atletico were initially ordered to partially close their own home arena for two La Liga matches, as well as pay a larger fine, for the Williams episodes. The winger is said to have been met with monkey noises during a match last month.

The association points to Atletico’s “active cooperation” as the reason why the penalty is now being dropped.

Nico Williams heard the monkey sounds as he went to take a corner. He then scored and pointed to his arm with reference to his own skin colour.

– There weren’t many of them. There are stupid people everywhere… I hope this changes more and more, said the Bilbao player after the match.

Atlético Madrid subsequently identified the person responsible for the racist incident. The person was revealed by camera images. He was arrested by the police when the match was over and banned from the club’s stands.

The Spanish federation praised Atletico’s swift action in what they accept was “an isolated incident”.

Spanish football has had a wave of racist incidents in recent years. Many of them have been aimed at Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior.
