NEW YORK — Ken Page, the famous Broadway star and voice actor, has died at 70.
The iconic performer known for his booming baritone voice died Sept. 30, according to Playbill. The cause of death has not been shared.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Page quickly rose to Broadway fame after his performance as the Lion during the original Broadway run of “The Wiz.”
He won a Drama Desk award for his performance as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in “Guys and Dolls.” He performed in the original company of “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and also originated the role of Old Deuteronomy in “Cats.”
He preferred live performances, but was the voice of Oogie Boogie in Tim Burton’s classic stop motion film “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
Danny Elfman, the musician and composer who performed with Page as the singing voice of Jack Skellington and composed “The Nightmare Before Christmas” music, posted on social media after Page’s death.
“I’m still stunned by last night’s terrible news. Ken Page died suddenly. He was the one and only Oggie Boogie Man. He was simply one of the best, most generous souls I know. Full of life and overflowing with joy. Talented and then some. Ken, my friend, you will be deeply missed,” he said.
