Sport: Aalborg had only been in one Champions League final before. It was in the 2020/21 season, and even then it was Barcelona who ran away with the victory. The Catalans are the most successful in the Champions League with 12 titles.

It was also Barcelona who came out the best from the starting blocks in the first half and quickly built up a three-goal lead. However, the Danes fought back in the match and went into the break at 15-15.

The second half continued as smoothly as the first ended, but in the final minutes Barcelona showed their routine and finally secured the victory.

The match was Mikkel Hansen’s last for Aalborg. The 36-year-old has been among Denmark’s biggest sports stars for a number of years and was named the world’s best handball player in 2011, 2015 and 2018.

In April, he confirmed that he is retiring after this summer’s Olympics in Paris. In Sunday’s final, he scored eight goals, which made him joint top scorer in the final.

Bjørnsen and Barthold also made a mark on the scoring list with four and two complete hits respectively.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, Harald Reinkind and Petter Øverbys Kiel won the bronze final 32-28 over Christian O’Sullivan’s Magdeburg.

Reinkind and O’Sullivan scored three and one goal respectively, while Øverby went off the field goalless.

It is the first time in history that five Norwegian men’s players have progressed to the semi-finals of the championship.

O’Sullivan’s Magdeburg were the reigning CL champions.
