Bird flu virus detected in raw milk in California

LOS ANGELES, NOV 25 – Public health officials in the western US state of California confirmed on Sunday that the bird flu virus was detected in samples of raw milk sold at retail, produced by a local dairy farm, reported Xinhua.

The Santa Clara County Department of Public Health, which has been testing raw milk from local retailers as part of a monitoring program for H5N1 bird flu, said in a media release that the county’s public health laboratory identified the H5 virus in samples of raw milk produced by Raw Farm LLC on November 21st.

The county immediately notified the California Department of Public Health, according to the statement, adding that the raw milk was voluntarily recalled by the company, and authorities have advised the public to
do not take the contaminated raw milk.

The California Department of Public Health yesterday warned the public to avoid the purchase of whole milk and raw milk cream top produced by Raw Farm LLC of Fresno County.

“There is no disease associated with the raw milk,” according to the agency.

Public health officials urged customers to ‘immediately return any remaining product to the place of purchase’ and also informed retailers to remove the affected raw milk from their shelves. – Named
