Blaine Griffin’s negative comments about Ward 12 Councilwoman Rebecca Maurer

Blaine Griffin’s negative comments about Ward 12 Councilwoman Rebecca Maurer

As a Ward 12 resident, I am troubled by recent remarks from Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin regarding Councilwoman Rebecca Maurer (”‘Carved up’ like turkeys on Thanksgiving,” Nov. 27). He claimed that some council members urged him to “get rid of Ward 12” during ward redistricting because they “don’t trust the council member” and believe she’s not “a team player.”

These statements contradict my experience as her constituent. Councilwoman Maurer is deeply committed to our community. She listens to residents, organizes cleanups, supports small businesses, has committed funding to improve commercial corridors, and hosts multiple State of the Ward events. While I haven’t agreed with every decision she’s made, I respect her thoughtful and compassionate approach to representing us. Griffin and others should engage with Ward 12 constituents to understand why we value her leadership.

Representation should prioritize the needs of residents over political maneuvering. Additionally, with new ward maps reportedly requiring approval soon, I urge City Council to release the draft maps and ensure public input. Transparency and community involvement are critical for fair redistricting that reflects Cleveland’s needs. Decisions about representation should not happen behind closed doors. Residents deserve a say in shaping their wards and future.
