Bolton: Oasis-themed bar to move to bigger site

Bolton’s Oasis-themed bar is moving sites to allow three times as many punters to enjoy live music.

Definitely Maybe has become a much-loved destination bar in the town since it opened around two-and-a-half years ago.

Known for providing a stage for artists and mixing up great cocktails in their downstairs venue on Mawdsley Street, owner Paul Gallagher has confirmed to The Bolton News that they will be looking to emulate that success at the former site of Blind Tiger – just a short walk away in Nelson Square.

It has previously been reported that X-Records could be moving into the venue, but Paul has confirmed that he and brother Mark, who run the bar together, now have the keys.

“It’ll nearly treble our capacity,” Paul said. “It’s good because it can help musicians play in front of bigger audiences they deserve.

“There will be about 150 people able to see the stage, whereas we currently have about 50.”

Along with the main stage, there will be a VIP area on the top floor, and there are plans for a “suspended” stage on the middle floor so that “solo artists can be seen from every section of the venue”.

“It’ll be a proper live music venue. Bolton doesn’t really have one of this size. It’s exciting,” Paul said.

There are also plans to include a ‘Flight Club’ style darts area, similar to the popular bar in Manchester.

Paul said: “We had a look at it mid-Covid but decided it wasn’t the right time, with all the uncertainty. And there was a lot of work needed doing.

“It had flood damage – internally there was a lot of damage – flooding issues, damp issues and a bad smell. It was carnage to be honest with you. Like a bomb scene.”

He added: “I feel like Nelson Square can be a bit of a go-to destination. Not just for people in Bolton, but people coming here from outside. Like it used to be.”

As for the old venue, a decision has yet to be made. “We’re not sure yet,” said Paul. “We have a few ideas for the old place, but we’ve got some thinking to do.”
