A woman has been arrested for trespassing after a train line had to be closed, transport police have confirmed.
British Transport Police have confirmed that they arrested a woman after they were called to Bolton Station following reports of a trespasser.
A spokesperson from British Transport Police said: “British Transport Police were called to Bolton station at 2.22pm today (1 August) following reports of a trespasser.
“Officers attended and the woman was removed from the railway. She has since been arrested for trespassing.”
Earlier in the afternoon, reports had suggested that the line was blocked at the station due to a trespass incident.
Northern had said: “Due to a trespass incident at Bolton the line is blocked. Train services running through this station may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.”
A spokesperson from Northern confirmed that at just before 3pm, all services at Bolton station had been stopped.
A spokesperson from Network Rail said: “We’re advising people to check before they travel and we are currently assisting the police with this trespass incident.”
Many train services were delayed and/or had to miss out stops due to the trespassing issue.
These include the Manchester to Clitheroe via Blackburn, Manchester Airport to Blackpool North and Stalybridge to Southport routes.
One example is the 14:18 service from Rochdale to Clitheroe, which reportedly didn’t call at Rochdale, Castleton, Mills Hill, Moston, Manchester Victoria, Salford Central, Salford Crescent, Bolton, Hall I’ Th’ Wood, Bromley Cross, Entwistle and Darwen and was instead set to start from Blackburn.
The 16:18 train from Rochdale to Clitheroe was set to start late from Rochdale due to the incident, with it expected to be 15 minutes late, among other trains on this route.
Trains on the Manchester Airport to Blackpool North line were also disrupted.
This includes the 15:46 service from Manchester Airport to Blackpool North, which was instead due to start from Manchester Oxford Road, missing out Manchester Airport, Heald Green and Manchester Piccadilly.
The 15:59 Blackpool North to Manchester Airport train was also set to no longer call at Blackpool North and Poulton-Le-Fylde, instead starting at Preston due to the trespasser.
