PETALING JAYA – Renowned illustrator Lai Theng Seng, better known as Book of Lai, made a name for himself with his bold and energetic art style, which seems to jump off the screen or page and continues to captivate the audience.
“Artwork needs to be colorful – that’s what sparks joy and happiness.
In addition, I tend to work quickly, so instead of using shadow techniques in art, I prefer to apply complementary colors to create contrast,” he said in an interview at his studio, recently.
According to Lai, elements of adventure and mobility are often the main inspiration in his work, which is most clearly seen through his favorite personal projects, Tiny Moving Place.
The mobile home concept, which went through many changes and improvements over the years, has become his iconic work. The project appears in many forms, including prints, pins, zines, mini-toys, postcards, as well as special commission projects.
“I started drawing this concept since my college days. It symbolizes freedom for me,” he said while showing a collection of sketchbooks that he has produced throughout his artistic journey.
The 32-year-old Penang native also shared that the heritage shophouses that can still be seen in George Town were a major influence on the design. Tiny Moving Place.
“In a traditional shop house, the ground floor is usually used for business while the upper floor is a living space. I want to keep that spirit in my designs. – ANN/The Star
