Sport: Chinese President Xi Jinping has also spoken about the proposal, which was first put forward by his French colleague.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy tells the online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda that the details of the proposal are unclear to him. He emphasizes the risk of Russia using a possible ceasefire to move military equipment closer to Ukraine.

– Who will ensure that their forces do not advance against us during a ceasefire, Zelenskyj asks.

– So I don’t understand the details. It doesn’t sound viable to me, says the Ukrainian leader.

When he returned home from his state visit to China, Vladimir Putin confirmed that Xi had raised the idea of a truce, but gave no further details. However, he criticized the West for demanding that Russia adhere to an Olympic peace while barring Russian athletes from the Games.

Russia has also previously been skeptical and believed that Ukraine could use a ceasefire to acquire more weapons and redeploy its armed forces for combat.
