BEREA, Ohio
Welfare check: West Bagley Road
Someone called police at about 4 p.m. Nov. 22 and said a child was throwing items from a second-floor window of a home on West Bagley near Baker Street.
The caller was concerned that the child would fall from the window.
When police arrived, they saw a pile of items on the ground under the home’s window, which was partly open. The child was inside near the window.
Police knocked on the home’s front door, but no one answered.
They peeked through a window and saw a woman later identified as the child’s mother, a 26-year-old North Ridgeville resident.
When the woman noticed police, she answered the door. She told them she didn’t believe her son was upstairs throwing items out the window.
Police showed the woman the pile of items outside the house and the open window. She said she would clean up the mess.
Meanwhile, the child was running naked around the house. He said hi to police and appeared to be healthy.
Police, concerned about the child’s welfare, asked for permission to look around the house, which was messy, with food scattered around.
The woman said no.
There was no evidence of alcohol or drug abuse.
The woman said the child is autistic and that she was temporarily distracted from watching him.
Another woman was in the home helping care for the child.
Police took no further action.
