War and conflicts: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi concludes that Iran will be able to “handle the situation well and not expose the region to more unrest” while at the same time safeguarding its own sovereignty and dignity. He says this after a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Wang says he noted that Iran has described this weekend’s attack on Israel as limited and that Iranian authorities have said it was carried out in self-defense, in response to Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, earlier this month.

Wang has also spoken to his Saudi Arabian counterpart. After a telephone conversation with Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Wang says China is willing to cooperate with Saudi Arabia to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia has high expectations for China to play an active and important role in that regard, and Saudi Arabia is open to strengthening communication and coordination with China in order to promote an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, says Wang after the conversation.
